The Science of Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra is a deep relaxation practice that can be supportive of individuals suffering from stress, anxiety, high blood pressure, and recovering from chronic illnesses such as cancer. Clinical research studies have shown the following benefits of yoga nidra:

 

 

  • Stress reduction (A 2017 pilot study indicated a decrease in stress symptoms for psychiatric nurses after 6 weekly sessions of yoga nidra.

  • Pain reduction (A 2017 study showed significant improvements in pain for clients with lumbar spondylitis using treatments that included yoga nidra. The U.S. Army Surgeon General has has listed Yoga Nidra as an approach for addressing pain management in Military Care)

  • Psychological health - (3 clinical studies in 2016 and 2017 showed decreased anxiety, depression in women.)

  • Trauma Support - (A 2011 study with 10 combat veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder/PTSD demonstrated reduced rage, anxiety, emotional reactivity, and increased feelings of relaxation, peace and self-awareness.  The Defense Centers of Excellence has approved yoga nidra as a Complementary and Alternative Medicine warranting continuing research for its use in the treatment of PTSD. )

  • Balanced blood glucose levels in diabetic patients - A 2009 study indicated that 41 patients with Type-2 diabetes who practiced yoga nidra for 30 minutes daily for 90 days had better control in their fluctuating blood glucose than patients taking oral hypoglycemics alone.)
